WoW private servers: common questions
What is a WoW private server?
A private server is a fan-run World of Warcraft realm hosted outside Blizzard, usually on an older expansion such as Vanilla (1.12), The Burning Crusade (2.4.3) or Wrath of the Lich King (3.3.5a). Most are free to play, and many add custom content, faster rates or seasonal realms.
Are WoW private servers legal and safe?
They break Blizzard's terms of service, and several large projects shut down after legal action in 2026. For players the practical risk is low, but never reuse your Battle.net password, download clients only from the server's own website and prefer servers with an established team and an active Discord.
What is the most popular WoW private server?
By estimated population, the biggest active servers right now are Sirus WoW (10,000-15,000 players), WoW Circle (5,000-20,000) and Warmane - Icecrown (8,000-12,000). Those numbers are estimates from the servers and their communities, not exact counts. The biggest server isn't always the best one for you, so our ranking also weighs player reviews and years online. More figures in WoW private servers in numbers.
How do I choose a private server?
Pick the expansion first, then decide between a blizzlike realm and a custom one, and check the rates, the population and the shop: No P2W means cosmetics only, P2W means real money buys gear or gold. Our rankings and player reviews compare exactly these points, and our guide to blizzlike, Classic+ and custom servers explains the types.
Which WoW private servers are blizzlike?
Blizzlike servers recreate the game as Blizzard shipped it, with no custom content and usually at x1 rates. We list 22 active ones, and the best blizzlike WoW private servers right now are Tauri WoW - Evermoon, UltimoWoW and WoW Circle.
Are there WoW private servers without pay-to-win?
Yes. 80 active servers in our list sell only cosmetics or have no shop at all. Right now the best WoW private servers without pay-to-win are Tauri WoW - Evermoon, ChromieCraft and Rising Gods.
Are there WoW private servers with bots?
Yes. We list 44 active servers where player bots or AI companions play alongside you, from bots that fill a missing dungeon role to realms built for solo play. Right now the best WoW private servers with bots are Microbot WoW, Titans League - Return to Glory and Eden Heroes.
How do I join a private server?
Create an account on the server's website, download the matching game client or launcher, and either set the realmlist address or let the launcher do it for you. Every server page here links the website and Discord, and our guide on how to play on a WoW private server covers each step and the common login problems.
